Kavarna

The town is situated 2 kilometres inland from the Black Sea, in the southern part of the Dobrudja Tableland. In the 6th c. BC, a Thracian settlement stood here to be replaced later by a Greek colony, Byzone. In the 1 st c. BC in the wake of a strong earthquake part of the town sank into the sea. The town was restored under the Romans. In the 14th c. it was mentioned as Kavarna and was the administrative centre of an independent principality under the boyars Balik, Dobrotitsa and Ivailo. Almost reduced to rubble during the Ottoman invasion, the town was rebuilt in the late 17th c. Over the recent years, Kaliakra Rock Fest is held in the town on a yearly basis with the participation of world-famous rock bands, which gained the town the name The Rock Center of the World.
Tourists are drawn by the Museum of History, the remains of the ancient city Byzone and the medieval fortress on Cape Chirakman.
